Welsh Government considering findings of Hackitt Review #ukhousing

Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety published its final report yesterday, recommending sweeping changes to the system of building regulation in England.

She was criticised for not recommending a ban on combustible materials on high rises, but the government later moved to announce a consultation on taking this step.

Today, Rebecca Evans, minister for housing and regeneration in Wales, announced her government would also be considering the findings of the review.

In a written statement she said: “Whilst Dame Judith’s recommendations are directed to the UK Government, given the broadly similar context in which we in Wales are working, they provide us with a robust and useful basis on which to develop our own long-term, robust approach to building safety. Our approach will be one which has at its heart the well-being and safety of residents in Wales.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to Dame Judith Hackitt for the review team’s engagement with the Welsh Government and stakeholders in Wales during the formative stages of the review.”

Building regulations are the domain of the Welsh Government.
