Grenfell Inquiry day 84: evidence from survivors and bereaved
The public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire continued today with evidence from people who survived or lost loved ones in the disaster, as well as residents of the neighbouring blocks.
No witnesses appeared directly before the inquiry today, but 61 witness statements were read into the record.
Many of these were from former residents of the low-rise blocks on the Lancaster West Estate where Grenfell Tower stands, known as the Walkways.
The inquiry also heard evidence from some survivors of the fire, as well as family and friends of those who lost their lives on 14 June 2017.

This included statements from Emanuela Disaro and Loris Trevisan the mother and father of Gloria Trevisan, an Italian architect who died with her boyfriend Marco Gottardi in their 23rd-floor flat.
Ms Disaro described her final call with her daughter.
“She wanted to cut off the phone because she didn’t want me to hear her scream,” she recalled.
And Mr Trevisan said: “It is difficult for me to quantify how long it took us to fully understand the seriousness of the situation.
“I remember that I switched the TV on and saw on Sky News the images of the building in flames. This would have been at around 3:15am Italian time.
“I was devastated. I wanted to die, if I had a gun, I would have killed myself.”
He added: “My life stopped there. I do not live any more.”
Dougal Steward, a resident of Hurstway Walk, described seeing Grenfell Tower ignite like “a roman candle” and feeling “numb” as he watched relatives of people trapped by the fire stood crying by its base.
Mohamed Yahya, a Walkways resident and father of Rabia Yahya – who lived in Grenfell Tower but survived the fire, wrote about his conversations with his daughter on the night while watching from his flat: “She said that she couldn’t [leave] as the smoke was so bad and whenever she opened her front door she couldn’t see anything.
“She also said that the firemen had told her to stay inside. I was shouting at her saying ‘don’t listen to the firemen. Come out!’
“I could see the fire from outside and I could see that it was approaching her flat and yet the firemen were telling her to stay inside. I just couldn’t understand it.
“I just thought to myself it was better for her to die trying then just burning alive and not even trying to escape. I couldn’t understand why she was being told to stay when I could see the fire moving to where she was.”
At one point, he added: “After this, I could just hear footsteps and screaming. Then, suddenly, I couldn’t hear her anymore. That was it. I thought they had died. I was completely distraught and I broke down crying.”
He was later reunited with his daughter outside the tower.

The inquiry will return on Monday 10 December with closing statements from various parties.
