As part of the Chartered Institute of Housing’s CIH Careers Week, housing’s twitterati were challenged to record a short video clip explaining why they chose housing as a career and why others should too.

Here are just a few of the videos tweeted:

Ross Williams, community asset team manager at Coastal Housing, says he chose housing because he “wanted to make a difference to people’s lives”:

Thomas Potter, digital business transformation manager at Clanmil Housing, has a simple question: “Why not work in housing?”:

For Paul Diggory, former chief executive of North Wales Housing and current chair of CIH Cymru, housing’s appeal lay in “the combination of being able to help and work with people and help shape places”:

Steve Ellard, asset manager at Yorkshire Coast Homes and CIH Futures board member, shares a couple of stories about his three-year-old daughter to explain why working in housing is “pretty cool”:

Evie Copland, digital strategist at Dumfries & Galloway Housing Partnership and a former Rising Stars finalist, quotes a reworking of the monologue from Trainspotting to make her point:

Gaby Wolferink, customer insight and research officer at Leeds & Yorkshire Housing Association, says the sector is “amazing, inspirational, welcome and diverse”:

Andy Johnson, engagement specialist at Bromford, says housing is a “helping and nurturing environment”:

“Housing is a human right; that’s why a career in housing is one of the most worthwhile things you can do,” says James Caspell, interim head of income, homeownership and business improvement at Sutton Housing Partnership:

Finally, former housing association chief executive Tom Murtha says you should choose housing because it “is the most rewarding career anyone could have”:

What is CIH Careers Week?

  • CIH Careers Week (#CIHCareersweek) is running all this week (5-9 March).
  • This coincides with National Careers Week #NCW2018 which promotes careers guidance for young people
  • Inside Housing will be running a series of pieces throughout the week about housing careers, from both junior and senior sector staff
  • CIH Futures - a board of 15 CIH members under 40 - also has lots of activity planned
  • It will be encouraging CIH members to use a #careerpledge template to pledge action to promote careers
  • Follow the hashtag #CIHCareersweek to keep up to speed with the week's events, which include CIH Futures webinars and a live Q&A on Wednesday
