Residents living in the Regina Road Estate will now be balloted after a recent consultation found most who responded were in favour of demolition #UKhousing

Croydon Council first unveiled a series of options for the future refurbishment or demolition of the South Norwood estate in December last year after it was featured in an ITV News documentary highlighting poor social housing conditions.

The London council was heavily criticised by an independent report into tenant conditions commissioned in the wake of the March 2021 documentary that described the flats on Regina Road as among “the worst in Britain”.

The report found that the council was still failing to treat residents with respect one year on.

Residents will now be balloted after a recent consultation found that most who responded were in favour of demolition of the three 1960s tower blocks and surrounding low-rise buildings.

The council said the ballot will be run by an independent body and is due to take place during April and May.

Jason Perry, executive mayor of Croydon, said: “When I became mayor I pledged to sort out the unacceptable conditions in our council homes and to listen to residents, working with them to put things right.

“Regina Road residents have faced unacceptable disrepair and housing conditions and it is only right that they remain at the centre of any decisions made about the future of their estate.

“I look forward to continuing to work with tenants and leaseholders as together we determine the future of their estate and their homes.”

The council also said that all eligible Regina Road tenants, leaseholders and freeholders within the consultation area will soon receive information to explain what happens next and where to raise any additional questions about the plans.
