The chief executive of public spending watchdog the Audit Commission is to stand down next year.
Next month Steve Bundred will tell the board of the agency he intends to move on to ‘a further phase of his career’ after six years as chief executive.
The 56-year-old will leave the commission once a timetable for appointing a successor has been agreed.
He said: ‘This feels like a practicable moment for the chairman of the board to move to appoint a successor in time to begin responding to what the forthcoming general election may bring.’
Mr Bundred had previously led the London Borough of Camden and the Improvement and Development Agency, before joining the commission.
Audit Commission chairman Michael O’Higgins said: ‘Steve has come to personify the commission for many people. We will have to work hard to find a successor.’
