A housing association has confirmed it is in talks to sell Liverpool Football Club’s famous Melwood training ground back to the club #UKhousing

Torus, the 38,000-home landlord, said it was “in negotiations with LFC”, which wished to buy back the site to create a training base for the club’s women’s team.

A report by The Athletic, the online publication, suggests the figure is in the region of £10m, but the landlord said it would be “inappropriate” to provide any more information while talks are ongoing.

When the association purchased the 12-acre site in West Derby in August 2019, LFC had already secured planning permission to deliver 160 new homes at the training ground.

At the time, LFC said its tender process had identified Torus as “the best socially responsible housing developer to take over the Melwood site”.

The landlord said it would develop new plans for the land in consultation with local residents and businesses.

In December last year, it received planning permission for a £48m scheme to build 162 new homes on the site.

The development would have included 59 houses and seven bungalows, along with an extra-care scheme, made up of 96 one and two bedroom apartments, all available for affordable rent and shared ownership.

The new homes were expected to sit alongside the existing Melwood building, which Torus planned to retain and reopen to create “a unique sporting legacy on a site synonymous with world-class football”.

In response to the sale discussions, a Torus spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Torus is in negotiations with LFC to reacquire the Melwood site.

“As negotiations are ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time. When we are able, we will provide an update.”

LFC has been contacted for comment.
