Polling by Yougov, released on Monday, shows 24% of voters think Labour would best handle housing issues compared to 22% for the Conservatives.

Answering the question “which party do you think would handle housing issues best”, 6% of voters favoured the Liberal Democrats, 10% said none and 31% said they didn’t know.

Labour has consistently led on housing in the bi-monthly Yougov poll, with the gap as wide as nine percentage points last August.

But the Conservatives narrowed Labour’s lead recently, drawing level on 22% each in mid-February, just a week after the Housing White Paper was released.

A Labour source said the polling showed the party is “winning the long-run argument on housing” and its “aim in the next seven weeks will be to translate that into votes”.

The same Yougov polling showed overall voting intention at 44% for the Conservatives and 23% for Labour, with 12% for the Liberal Democrats and 10% for UKIP.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was picked as the best prime minister by 14% of those polled, with current prime minister Theresa May favoured by an overwhelming 50%.

Yougov polled more than 2,000 people between Wednesday and Thursday last week.
