St Mungo’s has announced the sudden death of its chief executive Steve Douglas.
The homelessness charity said in a statement this morning that Mr Douglas, who was 57, died suddenly at his home yesterday morning.
Mr Douglas had a career spanning more than 25 years in the housing sector.
Before joining St Mungo’s in 2020 he served as group chief executive of Altair, a housing and regeneration consultancy group, which advised housing associations as well as central, regional and local government.
He was also chief executive of the Housing Corporation and Spitalfields Housing Association, and has served as interim corporate director of neighbourhoods and regeneration at Hackney Council.
In his role at St Mungo’s he played a central role in the formation of the Kerslake Commission, which sought to examine the lessons from the effort to house people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2019 he was awarded a CBE in the 2019 Queen’s honours list for services to housing.
In a statement, St Mungo’s said that Mr Douglas was committed to driving positive change within the organisation and was particularly committed to diversity and inclusion improvements.
Joanna Killian, chair of the board of trustees, said: “We are all very saddened to learn of Steve’s untimely death and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. He had worked tirelessly in the housing and homelessness sector for many years and was deeply committed to St Mungo’s in the short time he had been working with us.”
Mr Douglas leaves behind four children and a partner.
St Mungo’s said that its condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
