Rebecca Sycamore has been appointed interim chief executive at St Mungo’s following the passing of Steve Douglas #UKhousing

Rebecca Sycamore, currently executive director of strategy and development at St Mungo’s, will head up the charity on an interim basis.

It follows the announcement on Monday that leading housing figure Steve Douglas passed away over the weekend at the age of 57.

Mr Douglas had a career spanning more than 25 years in the housing sector, including a stint in charge of the Housing Corporation, when he oversaw an £8.4bn investment programme and the regulation of all of England’s housing associations.

Mr Douglas joined St Mungo’s as chief executive in 2020 and played a leading role in bringing together the Kerslake Commission, which sought to learn lessons from the impact of the pandemic on the homelessness sector.

Friends and former colleagues have paid tribute to Mr Douglas since the announcement on Monday, describing him as a “force for good in the housing sector”.

Joanna Killian, chair of St Mungo’s, said Mr Douglas “worked tirelessly in the housing and homelessness sector for many years and was deeply committed to St Mungo’s in the short time he had been working with us”.
