Sajid Javid has announced £54m of new funding for homelessness and rough sleeping at the Spending Round today.
Delivering his speech to MPs today, he said: “On any given night, there are too many people sleeping rough on our streets.
“The human cost is too high. Today, we do more. With £54m of new funding to reduce homelessness and rough sleeping, taking it to a total funding of £422m next year. That’s a real-terms increase of 13%.”
Spending Round documentation said the money would “tackle rough sleeping and homelessness, including improving the use of support services to address the significant needs of rough sleepers, many of whom have complex mental and physical health needs”.
In its manifesto for the 2017 general election, the Conservative Party promised to halve rough sleeping by 2022 and eradicate it altogether by 2027.
The government’s £100m Rough Sleeping Strategy published in August last year was met with scepticism when it emerged that none of the funding would be new money.
Snapshot figures released by the government in January indicated the first drop in rough sleepers since 2010.
Last year, Inside Housing revealed that council spending on temporary accommodation neared £1bn.
