During a debate yesterday in the Scottish Parliament Angela Constance, cabinet secretary for communities, social security and equalities, said the ministerial working group set up in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire will discuss automatic fire suppression systems.

Automatic fire suppression systems include sprinklers or aerosol fire suppression.

The working group has met twice and is looking at current building regulations around sprinkler systems to decide whether further action will be taken.

Ms Constance said: “The role that automatic fire suppression systems can play in supporting an overall package of fire safety measures for various building types will be discussed at the group.”

The Scottish Government has already claimed all council residential tower blocks in Scotland do not have aluminium composite material cladding.

Since 2005 all new build high-rise blocks in Scotland have been required to include sprinklers. However, sprinklers are not currently compulsory for existing tower blocks.
