North West landlord Plus Dane Housing has appointed Max Steinberg to be its new chair after Sir Peter Fahy stands down next year.
Sir Peter is a former chief constable of Greater Manchester Police and has been chair at Plus Dane since 2016. He will step down from the role once his nine-year tenure ends in March 2025.
The housing association said Mr Steinberg has now joined the board as senior independent director and chair designate “as part of succession planning”.
Sir Peter said: “When I joined Plus Dane almost nine years ago, it was going through challenging times.
“Together, the executive team, board members and colleagues have worked to overcome the challenges, and we now have robust finances, a balance of investing in new homes and existing ones, and a strong social purpose focussed on the welfare of our customers.”
Mr Steinberg’s career began at Liverpool City Council in 1975. He then spent 25 years at the Housing Corporation, where he eventually became director of investment and regeneration north.
Subsequent jobs include chief executive of economic development companies Elevate East Lancashire and Liverpool Vision, as well as a position on the board of Riverside.
In 1997, Mr Steinberg received an OBE for services to housing and regeneration on Merseyside and a CBE for services to business and the community in 2013. He has been a deputy lieutenant of Merseyside since 2020.
He said: “It is exciting for me to return to an organisation and a sector that has meant so much to me in my career.”
Ian Reed, chief executive of Plus Dane, added: “We have been incredibly fortunate to have had Sir Peter as chair of our board over the last nine years, and I thank him for his tenure, which has guided Plus Dane through transformation, significant challenges and positive change.”
In July, Mr Reed took Inside Housing through his recent drive to de-risk the organisation and refinance, after Plus Dane posted £4.4m deficit in 2022-23.
