“A great example of retaining heritage while embracing modern thinking. Proof that inner-city housing can be creative.”
Steve Douglas
Number of homes: 109 (all affordable)
Cost: £25 million
Developing housing on the site of the former Clyde Road council depot was part of a strategy to safeguard the adjacent Edwardian grade II-listed Tottenham town hall, previously on English Heritage’s ‘at risk’ register. The intricate restoration of the historic building formed the first phase of the scheme, with the second phase delivering 12 houses and 97 flats, 41 of which are for affordable rent and 68 for shared ownership. The design is sympathetic to existing listed buildings on the site. It reused salvageable slate tiles and granite paving stones from the original depot yard, along with 16,000 original bricks. The scheme secured £10 million of grant.
