The former chief executive of Byker Community Trust has been voted in by Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) members as the organisation’s next vice-president.
Senior housing professional and former chief executive Jill Haley won 40% of the votes cast in an election after going up against fellow candidates Michael Ash and Hannah Harvey.
Ms Haley will officially take on the role following the CIH’s annual general meeting in September 2022.
The newly elected vice-president began her housing career working in the housing department of Sunderland City Council aged 16.
She graduated with a degree in housing from Northumbria University in 1998 and was later awarded a fellowship at the CIH. She has worked in the sector for 41 years.
Ms Haley was appointed chief executive of Newcastle-based housing association Byker Community Trust in 2012 and spent nine years at the helm. She announced her retirement from the organisation after BCT merged with Karbon Homes in 2021.
Before that she worked for Sunderland housing association Gentoo, where she spent 12 years in a number of roles, including head of sales and marketing.
Between 2013 and 2017 Ms Haley served as chair of the CIH’s North East Board.
She said she was “very honoured” to be elected by CIH members.
“I have worked in housing for 41 years and I have been a qualified CIH professional for the majority of that time.
“I really want to give something back to the profession, by raising the profile of housing and increasing awareness of the sector’s social value and purpose,” Ms Haley said.
Ms Haley thanked CIH staff and her fellow candidates, saying it was a “privilege to compete alongside” them.
Josie Twinning, director of membership and partnerships at the CIH, said: “Jill’s dedication and passion will bring a formidable energy to our presidential team. And we’re really excited to support Jill as she gets started.
“It was great to see such commitment and enthusiasm from all three of our vice-presidential candidates – Mike and Hannah should be extremely proud of their campaigns; it’s clear to see they are making a real impact with many people in the sector.”
