Believe Housing has promoted a senior executive to be its new boss as the incumbent retires after a 44-year career in the sector #UKhousing

Alan Smith, who is currently executive director of investment, growth and performance at Believe Housing, is taking the reins at the 18,000-home landlord from Bill Fullen.

Mr Fullen, whose retirement was announced in November, has led Believe Housing since it was established in 2019, through the amalgamation of organisations across County Durham Housing Group (CDHG).

He was CDHG’s chief executive, helping set the group up in 2015 through a stock transfer from Durham County Council.

Prior to that, Mr Fullen led ALMO The Gateshead Housing Company, after working at Gateshead Council.

Mr Fullen, whose last day is today, said his time at Believe Housing has “been the most enjoyable and I know it has a strong culture in place and is in a great position to continue its work into the future”.

Mr Smith has also been at Believe Housing since its inception and was previously at CDHG as group director of finance and resources.

Believe Housing reported a 45% fall in pre-tax profit to £6m in its last last full year to the end of March 2022, despite a slightly increased turnover.

The lower surplus was partly blamed on higher staff costs and increased spending on void properties.

The County Durham-based landlord currently has a G1/V2 rating from the Regulator of Social Housing.
