A Large North East landlord has put forward a proposal to build 296 new affordable homes.
The proposed site will be Sunderland-based Gentoo Group’s largest affordable development to date and will form part of a new estate in Pennywell.
The new homes in Chester Gate will be for affordable rent, social rent and shared ownership, Gentoo said.
It will be part of Gentoo’s affordable homes programme, which aims to deliver more than 700 additional homes to the city by 2029.
It comes as Sunderland City Council aims to have 13,410 new build homes delivered by 2033 as part of its housing strategy.
The development will include two, three and four-bed homes.
They will be built on the brownfield land to the north and west of the current Chester Gate phase one development.
Joanne Gordon, homes and development director at Gentoo, said: “With more than 30,000 people on our waiting list, it’s crucial we build the right homes in the right places to deliver much-needed high-quality, affordable homes for the residents of Sunderland.
“As a responsible business we value the views and opinions of local residents and are really keen to hear their thoughts on our exciting plans to build even more new affordable homes across the city.”
A public consultation on the plans is now open and runs until 1 August.
In May, Gentoo revealed plans to invest £42.9m to improve nearly 6,000 homes across the city.
The 30,000-home landlord said that 6,644 residents will benefit from home improvements, ranging from loft insulation top-ups to new kitchens and bathrooms.
These improvements form part of its wider multimillion-pound investment plan for 2024-25.
