Sites identified by the Department of Health, the Department for Transport, the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs last month would have provided 50,000 homes.

But, according to the Financial Times, the departments will announce that enough land to build 33,500 more homes has been found later this month.

In July, the government said it would build up to 100,000 homes on public land by 2015 under the build now pay later scheme.

The initiative, which was introduced in the Budget this year, means developers do not have to pay for land until homes are complete, easing pressure on cash flow and increasing developer confidence.

In June, Mr Shapps said: ‘As one of the country’s biggest landlords, the government has a critical role to play in making sites available for developers so we can get the homes this country needs built.’

The government is due to unveil its housing strategy this month, which is expected to contain details of public land for housebuilding.
