Work on the much-delayed £800 million regeneration of the rundown Ferrier Estate in Kidbrooke Greenwich has begun.
Under the scheme, the existing 1,900 homes on the estate will be knocked down and replaced with 4,000 new homes, 38 per cent of which will be affordable.
The plans have sparked controversy because some residents are unhappy with the slow speed of progress, while others are annoyed that their homes are to be demolished. Greenwich Council originally opposed the plans in April 2002.
Senior representatives from Berkley Homes, the developer appointed by Greenwich and the Homes and Communities Agency attended the ‘ground breaking ceremony’.
