Great Places, which manages 19,000 homes in Greater Manchester, has agreed to work with Manchester Life to identify viable sites for new affordable housing.

Manchester Life is the residential property company jointly owned by Manchester City Council and Abu Dhabi United Group, the company that owns Manchester City Football Club.

The exercise aims to ensure that residential development frameworks in east Manchester incorporate a range of different kinds of affordable housing.

Manchester Life said the agreement would help to accelerate progress on viable sites and act as a platform for other developers and investors to get involved in delivering affordable housing in the city.

Matthew Harrison, chief executive of Great Places, said: “Great Places is one of the leading housing associations in the North West, and we are committed to being a major provider of affordable and social housing within Greater Manchester over the next 10 years.

“Effective partnerships are central to affordable housing delivery in today’s complex operating environment so we are very pleased to be collaborating with Manchester Life, given their track record of mobilising quickly and at scale to make a positive impact across a whole neighbourhood.”

Manchester Life was established in 2014 as a partnership between Abu Dhabi United Group and the council, aimed at developing areas near the Etihad Stadium, where Manchester City play football.

Marty Edelman, executive chair of Manchester Life, added: “With the range and scale of housing required over the next 10 years, it’s clear that a collaborative approach to master planning is a critical first step in defining the requirements for current and future residents.

“Given the calibre and track record of Great Places, we have every confidence that our collaboration will quickly shape viable pathways for significant new affordable housing and serve as a platform for new partnerships to form.”

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Manchester Life has already delivered a significant positive impact on Ancoats and New Islington and in doing so has rebuilt confidence in the area, so it is hugely encouraging to see this new collaboration with Great Places focussing on sustainable, affordable housing delivery.”
