Gentoo has appointed an interim chief executive following the departure of John Craggs last month.
David Jepson will join the Sunderland-based provider from tomorrow. He was previously deputy chief executive of Riverside and interim chief executive of Regenda Group.
Keith Loraine, chair of Gentoo, said there had been an “unacceptable” pay-off to a senior staff member. The Gentoo board is now considering applying a payment cap in line with the Enterprise Act 2016, which stops any public sector organisation from making a payment of more than £95,000.
The HCA said the organisation “exercised weak governance and internal control when agreeing executive contracts and severance payments to outgoing executives”.
The exact sum of the payment is not known, but Gentoo’s recently published accounts for 2016/17 show its highest-paid member of staff in 2015/16 received between £660,000 and £670,000 in the year – including basic pay.
Mr Loraine said he is “delighted” with Mr Jepson’s appointment.
He added: “David is joining us at a challenging time, but with his leadership skills and vast experience of governance in both executive and non-executive roles, I’m confident we can continue to make a positive difference, and work towards our vision for the City of Sunderland.
Mr Jepson said: “I’m looking forward to getting started. There is a lot of work to do, but having met some of the newly established group board and senior team, I’m convinced we can continue to deliver against its business strategy.
“I am particularly inspired by Gentoo’s customer and staff focus. It has achieved so much over the years and this success is something that I want to build upon, especially during such an important time for the group.”
