A number of people working in homelessness services, local and national government have been recognised in the 2024 New Year’s Honours list.
Four people providing homelessness services will receive an OBE, as will the boss of a major city council, as part of the annual award process.
John Cox, chair of the Joseph Cox Charity, has been awarded an OBE for services to homeless people in Manchester.
He is joined by Michelle Southern, founder and director of Street Paws, a charity that works with homeless people and their pets.
Michael Frankl is recognised for services to charity, homeless people and to the Jewish community in Cambridge.
Robert Hammond, deputy director at the cabinet office, will also receive an OBE for public and voluntary service to the LGBTQ+ community and homeless people.
Elsewhere in the list, Joanne Roney, chief executive at Manchester City Council, has been recognised for services to local government.
Ms Roney began her career at 16 as an apprentice in the housing department at Birmingham City Council.
She has also held senior housing roles at Kirklees Council and Sheffield City Council.
There were also a number of nominations at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).
Neil Brendan O’conner, director of the Building Safety Programme at DLUHC, will pick up a CBE for services to building safety.
Also at DLUHC, Michael Keith Jary, a lead non-executive director, will receive an CBE in recognition of his public service.
Rachael Mills, director of heat network advisory firm Chirpy Heat, was awarded an OBE for services to energy efficiency and diversity and inclusion. She worked at Southern Housing before co-founding Chirpy Heat in 2019 alongside a business forum for women working in heat networks.
