In her blog for Rising Stars 2018 task two, Jess Page writes about sharing research into housing management models and learning about innovation on homelessness prevention
Winning Rising Stars 2018 would afford me networking opportunities I couldn’t otherwise access.
My current network has supported me to learn and challenged me to improve the housing services I deliver. It has expanded my horizons from the G15 bubble and the distinct housing model operated at the former Notting Hill Housing.
I am grateful for the help and support I have received from my housing peers, particularly in reaching out to 40 housing organisations for my dissertation research into housing management models.
“To meet peers and leaders at other organisations is a great privilege.”
As Rising Star, I will promote this research and offer further organisations the chance to join and gain insights into the relationship between different frontline roles and performance outcomes.
To meet peers and leaders at other organisations is a great privilege; time is short and for others to spend it on you is an opportunity to learn and build something together. As a Rising Star I would be able to access this more readily.
I’m really keen to meet the other shortlisted candidates, who sound like they’re doing interesting work, and see what we can learn from each other.
I am passionate about partnership working and collaboration, both within the housing sector and with adjacent sectors – whether that’s working with other housing associations to bring social enterprises into the furniture market in London or working with small local charities that deliver in-depth and valuable services in the smallest of our communities.
Working in partnership is a way to match large-scale policy and power of wealth with a local patchwork approach to neighbourhood management and community support.
As a Rising Star, doors would be open to me and I’d use the opportunity to make new links – not just between my association and others, but to help other likeminded organisations work together too.
My ultimate goal is to gain and spread insight into innovation in homelessness prevention. I will build on support partnerships I have already created to stimulate an innovative response across the sector.
I will promote the principles of ‘whatever it takes’ embodied at Notting Hill Genesis, to prevent households from losing their homes.
Sharing resources and building relationships with the social and health sectors as well as the third sector enables this to be coordinated and more likely to be successful. I will work with experienced experts to put into practice my formal education to evaluate interventions and build on successful outcomes.
Winning is also an opportunity for professional development.
“My ultimate goal is to gain and spread insight into innovation in homelessness prevention.”
Having studied under Professor Anne Power, I have been fortunate enough to learn a great deal of history about housing and the environmental impacts of decisions made in the past and today.
As Rising Star I will encounter many professionals in the sector outside of my usual circle, and I relish the opportunity to learn more about placemaking, communication and leadership. I want to learn more to make good choices now to safeguard the future.
Ultimately, wining Rising Stars 2018 will enable me to expand my influence and improve the homelessness prevention work I am passionate about, and that will have a knock-on impact on any residents I work with in the future.
